Message From Your Board

Chair Message

Dear Al-Anon Friends,

I would like to begin by offering heartfelt thanks to the 2025 San Diego County AFG Area Information Service Office (AIS) Board Members for your time, dedication, and service over the past year. A special note of gratitude goes to those rotating off the Board - David M, Cindi H, Edna M, Ron P, Susan L, and Dayna H. Many of you served for three or more years, often stepping into roles when volunteers were scarce. Your willingness to say “yes” when it mattered most made a real difference, and we are deeply grateful.

To those continuing into 2026 - Sherry M, Ted P, Katrina D, Janice G, Devon M, and Dora S - thank you for your ongoing service and steady support of our AIS community. Your commitment helps to keep our area strong and connected.

I would also like to extend a warm welcome to our new Board members: Jayne T, Kathy L, Patti H, Danielle A, Joy B, and Tessa R. Thank you for your commitment to both the Al-Anon community and your personal programs. This round of nominations had the strongest participation the AIS Board has seen in several years, and that is something to celebrate. Participation truly is the key to harmony.

A full list of the 2026 AIS Board members, their positions, and contact information can be found above. We welcome your questions, your ideas, and your voices. We are here to serve you.

When I think of my recovery in Al-Anon, service is at the top of the list of “things that got me where I am today.” Through service, I’ve gained many unexpected gifts: confidence, patience, and a deeper understanding of how to live the Al-Anon principles in real time. I’ve learned to lean on the Traditions and the slogans - to pause before reacting, and to ask myself, “How important is it?” - not just in meetings, but in everyday life. Service continues to be one of the greatest teachers in my program, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to continue that journey.

I encourage each of you to consider service - whether at your home group, at the district level, or beyond. Service is another way we express gratitude for what we have received in Al-Anon.

Finally, Glee Anon is back! Please join us on Saturday, February 21st, 2026, at 7:00pm at Unity San Diego for Glee Anon: An Al-Anon Carol.

If you haven’t attended before, Glee Anon is a musical performance created and performed by Al-Anon members, set to familiar and popular songs with a distinctly Al-Anon twist. It is truly one of my favorite events of the year, and I hope you won’t miss out on the laughter, music, and fellowship.

Tickets may be purchased online at alanonsandiego.org or at the door, with a $15 suggested donation. This is the first of three fundraisers benefitting the AIS Office. Contributions are used by the Service Board to maintain the office and bookstore, spread the message through public outreach, and so much more. I hope to see you all there!

With gratitude,

Alexa C.

Outgoing Intercom Chair Report

It has been a privilege providing members with a colorful, organized, and relatively accurate Intercom for the last three years. 😊

As of January 24, Danielle will be the new Intercom Chair, making this a good opportunity to review how to submit events for inclusion in the Intercom and when submissions are due. The goal of the Intercom chair is to get the Intercom out by the 20th of the month prior.

HOW TO SUBMIT AN EVENT/NEW MEETING TO THE INTERCOM:

Go to www.AlanonSanDiego.org and, on the top menu bar, select INTERCOM. Then select SUBMIT EVENT TO THE INTERCOM. There will be a form for you to complete. You can also attach a flyer.

For AL-ANON MEETING UPDATES/MEETINGS NEEDING SUPPORT, your submission will be posted for three months. If you want it posted for longer than that, please resubmit it.

DUE DATE FOR SUBMISSIONS: 5pm on the 15th of each month

If possible, please get it in before that time.

Thank you for all of your support over the last three years, and I know you will be as supportive of Danielle as you have been to me. Thank you for letting me be of service, playing with fonts and margins!

Outreach Report

Throughout September 2025, Al-Anon’s message of Help and Hope reached millions through large jumbotron billboards positioned on both sides of the U.S.–Mexico border—the busiest border crossing in the world. The 10-second graphics alternated between English and Spanish, and as a result, visits to our Al-Anon Information Service (AIS) website and calls to our helplines increased—including calls to the Spanish-language North County AIS line.

With an estimated 10 million people passing through the border each month, and frequent stop-and-go traffic, travelers had ample time to read our message and even scan the QR code. The billboard displayed the WSO poster featuring a mother and child inside a bottle, along with the message: “Not everyone trapped by alcohol is an alcoholic.”

This project was made possible by generous funding from the Spanish-language meeting "Descubriendo Nuevas Opciones Hijos Adultos GFA " and the AIS, totaling $2,000. Due to its success, additional funds were raised, and the billboard is running again throughout December—an especially important time when holiday drinking can heighten family stress and more people may be ready to reach out for help.

Looking ahead, we plan to expand our outreach to include the Alateen message. Now, WSO’s Alateen flyer will run on the border billboards in January 2026, funded by San Diego Districts 69, 72, and 75. And maybe even enough raised so that Al-Anon's message also continues into January.

If you would like to help discover and support future outreach opportunities, please join the AIS Outreach Group, which meets on Zoom at 7:00 PM on the third Tuesday of each month:

Message From Your Board

Dear Al-Anon Friends,

Thank you to the Bylaws Review and Board Procedures and Policies Manual Task Force: Cindi H., Chair of the Committee, Edna M., Jayne T., Patti H., Sherry W., Andy J., and myself. Thank you to the ISRs who agreed to hold a special ISR meeting on Dec 13, 2025, at 10:30 AM to discuss the proposed "Restated Bylaws DRAFT revs 10.07.2025 FINAL." The Task Force met to address questions and comments submitted before the December special meeting, reviewed them with the professional consultant, and prepared a PowerPoint presentation to present their answers and findings.

After the presentation at the meeting, additional comments and questions were addressed. The ISRs and Alternate ISRs who attended voted to approve the proposed final draft of the Bylaws with a few edits and a Preamble. The final Bylaws document will be sent to registered ISRs.

The Task Force will continue to meet in 2026 to complete the Board Policies and Procedures Manual. Allare welcome to join. If you are interested, please contact: [email protected].

New Board members Danielle A, Devon M, Jayne T, Joy B, Kathy L, Lety C, Patti H, and Tessa R, will be installed at the January 10, 2026 Board Meeting and introduced at the ISR meeting that day. It is vital to elect new 2026 ISRs at your meetings and to have them register with Southern California World Service (SCWS) at https://scws-al-anon.org/group-records/ before the January 10 ISR meeting.

Yours with gratitude and in service,

Sherry M, Board Chair
